Embarking Upon a Career in Animal Welfare

If you wish to embark upon a career in animal welfare then you must be prepared for hard work and continuous dedication. This particular field of work has always been popular and certainly seems to be an attractive prospect in the sometimes gloomy job market.

This author had worked in the animal welfare sector for several years and I finished my career as an RSPCA animal collection officer. How I got there was through hard work and flexibility.

When starting out, one of the best things that you can do is to volunteer. Animal welfare hospitals or centres always need volunteers due to the financial demands that they have. From dog walking to cleaning out kennels to volunteering to drive animals to veterinary surgeons, there are a whole host of volunteering opportunities available. Do not forget the all important charity shops that fund many centres.

These shops always need volunteers, and although not glamorous it is exactly how I started my career. To work in this way, without pay at first, is a good indication of your dedication. It will also allow you to see the not so glamorous sides of animal welfare.

One must be flexible as well. Even though I wanted hands on experience with the animals I was offered my first paid job in animal welfare as a charity shop manager. This allowed me to see the behind the scenes working of the charity and also put me in contact with inspectors and animal collection officers who became valuable in my further career. Always remember the ultimate goal is to serve animal welfare and being part of it in any capacity should inspire and uplift you.

As for qualifications, who you are is more important than what you know.

Obviously any animal welfare qualifications or certificates that you gain will be invaluable, yet it is also important to generate “people skills” and so being able to present yourself to the public professionally and in control is a vital skill. Courses that involve conflict management are extremely useful and will show future employers how you will be able to deal with problems efficiently and calmly.

The emotional side of animal welfare is one that must be taken into consideration. Unfortunately there will be times when difficult decisions will need to be made for the ultimate welfare of the animal and exposure to this side is important early on to prepare you for the future. You could perhaps offer to volunteer in an veterinary centre or animal clinic.

Another most valuable attitude is one of positivity and expectation. Do not allow others to put you off from your goals. Ultimately it is YOU who decide your fate and it will be your dedication, enthusiasm and hard work that will pay off in the long run.

Question by Kayla: Why is cross breeding dogs wrong if many popular breeds are a result of it?
Aren’t Chow Chows the result of mix breeding Somoyeds and Tibetan Mastiffs? If the breeder breeds dogs with good genes why is unethical/irresponsible? There are thousands of homeless animals in shelters, sure, but if that is why mix breeding is wrong then isn’t all breeding wrong?

I know people in this section can get angry over small things so this is just a question, okay? I don’t actually plan on doing this. I prefer mutts from shelters than purebreds or “designer breeds”.

well from a health perspective cross breeding is much better for dogs as they become immune or less likely to receive a disease, virus etc as a result of the mix of genetics. i have never heard of it being unethical or irresponsible unless ur breeding domestic dogs with wild

Lamb Protein in Dog Foods

Proteins are necessary for all aspects of growth and development of dogs and are very important in structural makeup and the immune system. In addition, they are burned as calories and can be converted to and stored as fat.

Not all proteins are created equal, and some are better for pets than others. Every protein source contains different levels of amino acids and each protein is different in its ability to be broken down into amino acids. The ability of a protein to be used by the body and its amount of usable amino acids is termed biological value. Egg has the highest biological value and sets the standard by which other proteins are judged. Egg has a biological value of 100. Fish meal and milk are close behind with a value of 92. Beef is around 78 and soybean meal is 67. Meat and bone meal and wheat are around 50 and corn is 45. Things like hair and feathers would be very high in protein but would be down at the bottom of the list for biological value.

Because every dog is unique, it’s sometimes very difficult to determine what causes food-related allergies and what doesn’t. Common pet food culprits include wheat, corn and soy. Various proteins also create their share of problems in certain dogs. Some dogs are even allergic to chicken and beef!

Lamb and rice dog food is a healthy choice for your dog’s diet because lamb is a great source of protein and also because rice is highly digestible. This leads to less stomach upset and it also means your dog won’t have to go to the bathroom as much. When your dog eats foods that are highly digestible, the result is that your dog benefits from more nutrients and you have less to clean up in the yard.
