ONCE IN NINE LIVES, SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY HAPPENS.

The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. Then Gwen’s veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who’d been abandoned. It was love at first sight.

Everyone warned that Homer would always be an “underachiever.” But the kitten nobody believed in quickly grew into a three-pound dynamo with a giant heart who eagerly made friends with every human who crossed his path. Homer scaled seven-foot bookcases with ease, survived being trapped alone for days after 9/11 in an apartment near the World Trade Center, and even saved Gwen’s life when he chased off an intruder who broke into their home in the middle of the night. But it was Homer’s unswerving loyalty, his infinite capacity for love, and his joy in the face of all obstacles that transformed Gwen’s life. And by the time she met the man she would marry, she realized that Homer had taught her the most valuable lesson of all: Love isn’t something you see with your eyes.Book Description
Once in nine lives, something extraordinary happens…

The last thing Gwen Cooper wanted was another cat. She already had two, not to mention a phenomenally underpaying job and a recently broken heart. Then Gwen’s veterinarian called with a story about a three-week-old eyeless kitten who’d been abandoned. It was love at first sight.

Everyone warned that Homer would always be an “underachiever,” never as playful or independent as other cats. But the kitten nobody believed in quickly grew into a three-pound dynamo, a tiny daredevil with a giant heart who eagerly made friends with every human who crossed his path. Homer scaled seven-foot bookcases with ease and leapt five feet into the air to catch flies in mid-buzz. He survived being trapped alone for days after 9/11 in an apartment near the World Trade Center, and even saved Gwen’s life when he chased off an intruder who broke into their home in the middle of the night.

But it was Homer’s unswerving loyalty, his infinite capacity for love, and his joy in the face of all obstacles that inspired Gwen daily and transformed her life. And by the time she met the man she would marry, she realized Homer had taught her the most important lesson of all: Love isn’t something you see with your eyes.

Homer’s Odyssey is the once-in-a-lifetime story of an extraordinary cat and his human companion. It celebrates the refusal to accept limits—on love, ability, or hope against overwhelming odds. By turns jubilant and moving, it’s a memoir for anybody who’s ever fallen completely and helplessly in love with a pet.

Amazon Exclusive: Gwen Cooper on Homer’s Odyssey

I never wanted to be a writer of non-fiction. While I can honestly say that I dreamt of being a writer from my earliest discovery of books, memoirs held no interest for me. The stories I loved—and devoured with a single-minded intensity that charmed my English teachers while causing my math teachers to gnash their teeth in frustration—were stories that were larger than life, that played out on a grand scale. I read fairy tales, mythology (Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse, Native American, you name it), epic poems, novels about soldiers, pirates, adventurers, explorers, heroes, magicians, revolutionaries, beautiful damsels, dashing cads, romances, tragedies, comedies—everything, in short, that struck me as just a touch more interesting than real life ever seemed to be.

It amazes me now that, for years, I never thought about Homer as being the hero of his own story. I knew that he was extraordinary, I knew that everybody who ever met him was full of questions—wanting to know why and how. But he was also just my cat, the goofy little guy who jumped around in circles when I came home at night, who loved to chase around stuffed toys, insisted on getting his fair share of tuna if I was making a tuna sandwich, and curled up in a tight ball on my left knee whenever I sat at the computer to email friends or finish up work projects.

The idea of writing about Homer didn’t occur to me until Laurence, my husband—who was then my boyfriend—met him for the first time and wanted to know (as most people do) how it was that Homer ended up blind. When I told him how Homer had been abandoned shortly after birth, how he’d been near death until he was brought in to my veterinarian, how the price of saving his life had been the loss of his vision, and how he’d still nearly met an inglorious end in an animal shelter because nobody wanted to adopt him until finally my vet called me—when he heard all that, Laurence’s response was, “He’s like Daredevil, like a comic book superhero. He has an origin story and everything.”

Laurence was quite pleased with this analogy, and loved to expound upon it. When he observed that Homer was braver, faster, and more agile than my two sighted cats, or when he saw Homer leap five feet straight into the air to catch a buzzing fly in mid-flight, he would talk about Homer’s “superpowers.” When I told him how Homer had once single-handedly chased off a burglar who broke into my apartment in the middle of the night, Laurence said, “You’re a storyteller—why don’t you tell some of these stories?”

It’s impossible to quantify or define the ways in which Homer has moved me, inspired me, and flat-out entertained me over the years. But perhaps the greatest gift he’s given me is the ability to find the heroism and grandeur of my favorite stories smack-dab in the middle of my everyday life. Don’t get me wrong—there’s plenty of action and larger-than-life adventure tales to be found in these pages. But Homer is extraordinary even when he’s at his most ordinary. No aspiring writer in love with adventure stories could have asked for better material.

I always wanted to be a writer, but I never wanted to be a writer of non-fiction. Sometimes, things work out differently than you think they will. Sometimes life picks you up and drops you in the middle of a story that’s better than any you could ever have imagined. Sometimes you don’t know what’s missing until you find it. Homer is the living proof.—Gwen Cooper

With the development of the informational technologies and with the appearance of such an excellent tool, which goes under an honorable title world wide web, the popularity of common shops has started to decrease in a rather rapidly way. And there’s nothing to wonder about. On the net shopping has a terrific number of advantages just before offline shopping. In order to make shopping you’ve got to go from 1 shop to an additional one, to spend some certain time to be able to purchase every thing you need to. You’ve got to carry heavy bags full of goods. Moreover, if you come to the shop, as a rule, you invest even more than you might have planned to spend and rather of economizing, you invest even even more. And regrettably, the servicing is also not the most beneficial nowadays, and regularly you come across impolite way of servicing within the shops. And who wants the mood to be spoiled? Which is why a growing number of people today enjoy generating shopping on the internet.

The pet grooming industry has witnessed a dramatic increase in luxury services for pets in recent years.

What’s truly fascinating is that persons are willing to spend small fortunes on such services for pets as reiki, holistic massage, dog facials and other high-end treatments that inside the past were reserved for humans.

The American Pet Merchandise Association reports that persons spent .36 billion on pet grooming and boarding services in 2009, which is expected to enhance exponentially within the future.

What’s even alot more fascinating is that many people are willing to invest a paw and a leg on luxury services for pets inside the midst of the worst economic climate because the Depression.

I spoke with some leading business experts to get the inside scoop on why such services for pets are increasing.

Services for Pets are Enhancing

According to Wendy Booth, certification coordinator for the National Dog Groomers Association of America, one reason for this trend is given that pet groomers are finally obtaining the recognition they long lacked.

“We’re at the bottom of the scale, along with kennel workers,” said the Colorado-based groomer. “But immediately after becoming in this industry for 30 years, I can now say that what’s been happening within the profession is fabulous. Professionalism is becoming built in the business. We have all sorts of things, like blueberry facials, that had been not heard of even 10 years ago. In this down economy, this is shocking.”

A different reason for this trend may possibly have to do with the aging baby boomer population; these folks generally have alot more disposable income. Plus, their kids are grown and on their own.

“Animals have turn out to be people’s youngsters,” Booth said. “As we get into the empty nest syndrome, we want a Fifi or a Foofoo. We’re out there spending income on them.”

The Posh Spas for Pets Trend

At Chateau Poochie, the ultra swank pet resort and spa in Pompano Beach, Fla., dogs (and cats) get treated to one of the most luxurious spa along with other services in surroundings a lot of people in no way experience.

“I only hire one of the most top-notch groomers,” said Chateau Poochie owner Amy Jo Birkenes. “I’m proud to say we’re the slowest groomers; we have hand-scissor professionals. It is like an individual going to a fabulous hairstylist.”

At the Pet Spa at Harrods in London that caters to “V.I.P.s” (Incredibly Very important Pets), pet parents can expect to shell out 295 British pounds (the equivalent to 472 American dollars) for a deluxe pet day spa expertise that could possibly contain a “peticure” (total with the latest fashion nail color), a soothing bubble bath, massage, reiki and a lot more.

And shell out the large bucks they do.

Birkenes believes that folks justify spending plenty of money on their pets in a recession given that they often go without having a lot of luxuries.

“When many people do without, we feel very good about doing good points for our pets,” she said. “Many of us treat our pets superior than some family members members. Pets frequently are our finest pals.”

Individuals are also a lot more isolated, because of the proliferation of the net.

“In this social networking world we live in, if you’re not talking to your pc, you’re talking to your dog,” Birkenes said.

Plus, pets tend to be alot more appreciative of the nice points their human parents do for them.

“When dogs come out of the grooming salons, they’re so pleased that they literally dance around,” Birkenes pointed out. “I’ve truly observed dogs admire themselves in the mirror.”

Why Holistic Services for Pets are Increasing

In addition to the high-fashion haircuts, “peticures” along with other luxury services, such treatments as reiki, holistic massage, aromatherapy along with other such New Agey modalities for pets are gaining popularity.

“People will spend additional income on these kinds of services than they are going to on conventional grooming,” said my friend, Mark Hills, who’s inside the grooming supply small business. “It’s fantastic.”

Pet business experts attribute the growing popularity of holistic services for pets to the reality that a large number of humans themselves are benefiting from these remedies. Even classic veterinarians are increasingly adding such complementary treatments to their practices.

Why are individuals willing to invest tons of dollars on such services for pets, specifically in a deep recession? My guess is for the reason that pets are the only beings on earth who present us humans unconditional loyalty, respect and love. Which is priceless.

Keep in mind the significance of HAPPINESS in pets ! A type of psychological comfort/satisfaction encounter. It assists pets seek ideal conditions or repeat beneficial behaviours (eating, sex); chemical reactions are involved – feelgood chemicals are released in the brain. In cats it’s most usually observed as “contentment” and is also evident in cats and kittens throughout play. Play is actually a self-fulfilling behaviour which produces “happiness” by release of feelgood chemicals.

Farm Animals Love Porno Flicks

Article by Melvin Polatnick

The Big And Hard breeding Farm out west had discovered a revolutionary new way of sexually stimulating their livestock— show them pornography. That method had proven to be so effective that it was rare to see Jukes Kallikaks seven thousand cows without horny bulls behind them. In a story that circulated around the county the idea came to him after watching a stimulating porno film. He told his neighbors that if a porno flick gets him horny why shouldn’t it make a bull or cow feel the same way.

Jukes Started by putting a giant screen in the center of his ten thousand acre field. Fifteen thousand bulls and cows at first paid no attention to the new installation. He then turned it on showing a bull mounting a cow. Only a few dozen of the livestock came over to watch. But when he turned on the sound, the ecstatic mooing of the cow was heard all over the field, a large crowd of animals soon started to watch. The word spread and thousands in the herd were stampeding to get a front row view. The riot turned into a sex orgy with thousands of bulls mounting cows. Jukes was not surprised at his success, he knew it would work.

The second stage of his experiment was to prove that animals were selective in choosing porno flicks. He deduced that if he was, why not his bulls and cows. He soon scattered four giant screens around the field. He turned on the videos showing four different porno flicks. The stars of the flicks were bulls and cows of different colors, sizes and shapes. The animals at first wandered from flick to flick. They seem to be undecided. But they all soon chose their favorite. It was five horny bulls standing in line to make love to a beautiful black and white Hereford cow. The sex crazed bulls were four Brahmin and one Black Angus. When the video was finished the scene was reenacted by the audience, and each cow was gang banged. This orgy went on until jukes started distributing the hay.

Jukes Kallikak Still had things to prove. He believed that animals could be turned on by watching humans having sex. The screens in the field began showing videos of humans making love in different ways. The animals wandered around stopping to look at each flick for only a few minutes. They seemed to be not interested in human sex orgies. But Jukes Kallikak despite his name was not a stupid man. He turned on new videos showing bulls and cows having sex parties with humans. This drove the animals wild. Even when hay was distributed they still had their eyes glued to the screens.

That last experiment proved to be a disaster. The herd by watching the videos of animals and humans making love became uninterested in one another. They yearned to have sex with people. Jukes found their perverted sexual desire of no benefit to him, he was only an animal breeder. Jukes had to sell his useless herd to a slaughter house and declare bankruptcy. The Big And Hard Breeding Farm is no more. Jukes Kallikak eventually got married and become a breeder of a human family. It was a little boring, but it was all that he was fit to do.melpol

Whispering is not Enough, Learn to Talk Dog ? They will love you for it!

All behaviors that dogs exhibit are designed to either access pleasurable situations or avoid and escape unpleasant situations.  A dog’s communication systems are much ritualized and designed to avoid or cutoff conflict. This has made dogs as a species very successful in terms of their numbers and their variety. Things go awry when we humans misread the signals dogs send us leaving them helpless to effectively communicate their feelings to us. We cannot know or understand what dogs think and vice-versa. What we can do is understand canine body language, observe them as we interact with them and then respond appropriately.  ‘Talking dog’ is simple if you remember a few important rules and it will make interacting with dogs fun and safe.  The dogs you come into contact with will really appreciate it.

The types of social behaviors dogs demonstrate can be broadly grouped into either distance decreasing or distance increasing.  A dog uses distance decreasing behaviors to promote approach, play and continued interaction.   A lumbering soft gait, relaxed body and a relaxed face indicate the dog is encouraging interaction. Dogs who want to engage in play will demonstrate the ‘play bow,’ a posture where the dog bows the front of his/her body so that the front legs are parallel to the ground while the hindquarters remain in the standing position, the dog may offer you a paw, lean into you or rub against you.

Distance increasing signals vary and can be easily misread. The distance increasing signals we all seem to ‘get’ are when a dog stands upright making  each part of their body appear as large as possible, weight on the front legs, upright tail, upright ears, piloerection (the hair on their back stands up), and the dog will bark or growl. We seem to instinctively react to these signals and take them as the warning they are.

The distance increasing signals that we commonly misinterpret are the more appeasing behaviors dogs demonstrate.  Dogs use these appeasement behaviors to make friendly encounters more reliable and to help them pacify what they anticipate to be a hostile encounter if escape is impossible for them. These behaviors are a nonaggressive way to ‘cut off’ conflict. When a dog displays these behaviors we have to recognize that this is the dog’s way of showing us that they are unsure and a little scared.

]]>

You may see appeasement signals in one of two ways.  Passive appeasement behaviors are easily misunderstood and are often labeled as ‘submissive.’  Dogs displaying passive appeasement will present themselves in a recumbent position exposing the underside of their body.  The dog’s ears are typically back and down against the head and the tail is often tucked between the upper legs.  Sometimes the dog will expel a small amount of urine while it waits for the attention to cease. The active appeasement dog is often incorrectly labeled as ‘excited’ or ‘overly friendly.’  They will often approach you with the whole rear-end wagging in a “U” shape allowing both its face and genital area to be inspected and they may be desperate to jump up and ‘get in your face’.

For humans then, it is important when meeting and greeting dogs to be able to recognize if a dog is friendly and wanting to greet you or if the dog is experiencing stress or fear. A conflicted dog will want to approach but is too scared or unsure of the outcome. Their body language will vacillate between displays of distance decreasing behaviors and distance increasing behaviors. Interacting with a dog that is conflicted can be risky. If you make a wrong move and the dog cannot avoid the approach then they may become aggressive.  This is often the case with a fear biter.  If a dog is demonstrating ambivalent, mixed signals then it is advisable to avoid sudden movements, and to allow the dog an escape route. Don’t force the meet and greet by moving toward the dog or having the dogs’ owner manipulate the dog toward you.

In general when you meet and greet a dog make sure you have a relaxed posture. Let the dog approach you, turn slightly to the side as this is less threatening for the dog than you standing in a full frontal position leaning over them.  Always ask permission from the dog’s owner to pet their dog. Talk gently to the dog without making eye contact.  It helps to crouch down and keep your hands by your side without making any sudden movements. When you have determined the dog is not showing any signs of stress or fear and their body language is relaxed and happy then you can slowly move your hand under their chin to stroke them. If the dog is showing passive appeasement signals, as described above, then step away, give them space and allow them to approach you on their terms and in their preferred timing.

It is important that we recognize a dog’s “cut off’ behaviors.  ‘Cut off’ behaviors are designed to cut off the social contact. If, when greeting a dog, you don’t recognize that the dog is  scared or stressed or you choose to ignore the dog’s communication and push forward with your approach you  are unfairly pushing the dog into a situation where it may only be left with one option and not a favorable option to either dog or human.

Dogs will typically give plenty of warning if they are uncomfortable with something that another dog or a person is doing.   These warning signs may include a direct stare, a rigid body, a growl and showing “whale eye” (flashing the whites of their eyes). The dog’s ears will be flat against the head and they may have a closed tense mouth, if you see any of these signals then stop what you are doing immediately and allow the dog to slowly back away.

Dogs are wonderful animals that love and need to be a part of our social lives.  But, like people, their personalities range from being social butterflies to wallflowers. Tailor your approach and greeting style based on the communication they are giving you. Dogs are very clear with their intentions and emotions and respond appropriately to ours.  Remember our body language and approach speaks louder than our words to a dog.

Animals Have Souls-They Are The Essence Of Pure Love! By Cherokee Billie

Animals Have Souls-They Are The Essence Of Pure Love! By Cherokee Billie

The subject of animals having souls is cause for great debate for religions and individuals.  Yet, if you have ever had a close relationship with an animal you know they have emotions and a soul.  It is a scientific fact that energy cannot die, it only changes form. That applies to humans and animals.

Many people have faith and believe that when they shuffle off this mortal coil they will be in heaven. Faith applies in the belief that we will be reunited with our precious pets on the other side. St. Francis of Assisiis honored by the Catholic Church as thepatronsaintof animals. Why would there be a saint for animals if there was not a soul or spirit to these precious creatures?

I have never seen an animal place a baby in a bag and throw it into the water to drown.  I have never seen an animal shoot a human being for sport. I have never seen an animal set fire to a human for enjoyment.

I have seen animals rescue humans and other animals.  I have seen animals cry over the death of their beloved master or the loss of one of their own kind.  I have seen mother animals care and nurture their children.

Many of you know that I have traveled into spirit countless times and I do see animals throughout the spiritual kingdom.  So if you wonder if you will be reunited with your beloved pet the answer is YES.

If you have faith you will understand that these beautiful souls exist to show us an example of pure love and the power of the Divine.  When they pass they go directly into spirit without any delays because of their purity.

When I was a young woman I had a marvelous and incredibly intelligent parakeet named Tweety. I was hospitalized for one month and during that time Tweety stayed in my parents’ home. When I returned from the hospital and went up to the cage Tweety started crying. My mother exclaimed, “I have never seen a bird cry.”

I had a dog, Lady, that had to stay with my parents when I traveled and she would lay by the front door waiting for my return, and not move except when they picked her up or when I would telephone and talk to her.  My mother said Lady listened intently to every word I said and then went back to the front door.

]]>

My precious cat Isis woke me up and spoke to me in clear precise English and told me about a robber in our house.

I fell down and could not get back up and my little dog Julia laid right next to me until help came.  She knew that I was in danger and she wanted to be a comfort to me.  So we cuddled and I felt that magical LOVE energy between us that transcends all barriers and makes words unneeded. Thank you God for this miraculous experience.

Lady died in 1987 yet, in the year 2004 I saw her walking through a hallway in an apartment I had rented far away from where we had lived.  It was as though she was looking at where I was and making sure I was okay even now.

I have a girlfriend whose puppy dachshund Kassidy and I talk regularly on the telephone.  Kassidy cries until the phone is placed next to her ear and I ask her about her day and talk about different things.  I talk with her about my admiration for her and her immense beauty and our ONENESS and we just share a long moment of LOVE that makes me laugh in JOY. Then she kisses the phone. You will note I said ‘with’ her, not ‘to’ her.

Recently I was a guest on a radio program and the host did energy vibrational healing at the end of the program.  My girlfriend was listening to the program with Kassidy who when she heard me her ears perked up and listened carefully.  When the host started the energy healing she closed her eyes.  When it finished she opened her eyes and yawned totally refreshed.  Even dogs understand energy coming to them.  There are many people who cannot receive energy like that.

Native Americans always considered animals sacred especially the Buffalo, the owl, the eagle, and the cougar.  Whenever they killed an animal they made a ceremony and honored the spirit of the dead animal for all that it was giving them. Every part of the animal was used to extend the life of the people.  Native Americans have felt that the spirit of an animal can guide them and that they can take on the spirit of the animal.

In India cows, elephants, monkeys and mice are considered sacred. The cows the most sacred because it gives milk, which nourishes life.  Gandhi advocated no cruelty to animals.

Many cultures throughout the world consider animals to be sacred.  This has been going on since the beginning of time.  Of course not everyone believes this to be true.  There is great insensitivity to those who cannot see the beauty of life in the eyes of an animal.  The loyalty and love an animal can give is so precious and their souls are precious to the Great Divine Spirit.

Not all precious pets are warm and furry.  Here is a wonderful story from a friend of mine who told me about Alex, the pet box turtle her husband had when he was a boy. Alex had stubs for front feet and had no claws; however, he had survived for many years in the wild.  When he lived with his human family, he taught himself how to go down the stairs, would warm himself by the fireplace. Alex also learned that he was to stay in his humans’ room, as he would try to leave it sometimes, and be reminded of where he was suppose to be.  He would turn around and go back into the room when directed to do so.  He would also be quite the champion in turtle races as he would actually cut off the other turtles as a strategy to win.

He knew that he was taken care of and felt the kindness and safety of his adopted family who loved him.

Just picture a whale in the ocean their beauty and majesty is beyond compare and the intelligence that is there has been proven by many personal accounts of those who encounter them.  The same can be said for the intelligence of dolphins and the countless times they have helped humans.

I cannot prove to anyone that they have a soul and as do animals. I know that what ever we believe we carry with us into the next dimension. So if you believe animals have souls you will be surrounded by many wonderful creatures in the spirit world. If you do not believe, it will be a cold place without the love of the special creatures that were given to us as examples of purity of love.

~~~ UNTIL YOU HAVE LOVED AN ANIMAL,
                                  A PART OF YOUR SOUL REMAINS UNAWAKENED ~~~
