What Does the Phrase ?holistic Pet Food? Really Mean?

Holistic pet foods are, often reflexively, considered by many to be the healthiest pet foods available. What is the definition of ‘holistic’ and what does it mean in the pet food industry? The term ‘holistic’ is derived from the Greek word ‘holos,’ which means ‘all,’ ‘entire,’ or ‘total.’ It implies that the sum properties of a system (e.g., a body) can only be explained adequately if all its parts are considered in unity instead of on an individual basis. Or, as Aristotle summarized it, ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.’ The principle of ‘holistic medicine’ has been recognized and applied intuitively by many cultures to the present day. Although the holistic approach was eventually lost to the majority of people in the Western world, eventually the concept was rediscovered by ‘holistic’ physicians, who realized that one cannot heal the whole person if one considers only the part of the body that shows the most obvious symptoms of disease.

Increasing numbers of veterinarians have come to see the importance of the holistic approach in the treatment of their animal patients. For example, what’s the benefit of recommending repeated administration of a stool softener to an animal that is constipated without correcting the underlying cause of this symptom? In many cases, this would simply amount to evaluating the animal’s diet for possible causes of the condition. The same applies to other diseases, such as eczema, which are often caused by food allergens. How could a topical cream restore health if a food allergen was the culprit?

Holistic treatments look beyond the surface veneer of disease symptoms, and a good holistic veterinarian will always inquire about a pet’s diet, which is one of the most prominent factors determining states of both health and disease. Considering that the vast majority of a pet’s immune system is located in the intestines, it is understandable that food is supremely important for maintaining good health. Food loaded with toxins or deficient of nutrients will eventually affect the entire body. Although symptoms may only become obvious in one location, it is likely that more than one organ will be knocked out of balance. Instead of treating the symptoms, one might consider the fundamental causes of the ailment and treat the animal holistically.

Here’s where holistic pet foods come in. As food is a major determining factor of pet health, the concept of a food that nourishes the entire system becomes extraordinarily important as a major means of disease prevention. Any sincere attempts undertaken by pet food manufacturers to offer holistic pet food is the highest ethical endeavor in this industry. The term ‘holistic pet food’ is being exploited excessively, much as the terms ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ have been misused for some time.

It is not enough to omit obviously toxic ingredients to pet foods to rightfully call them holistic. Pet foods that are truly holistic not only not do no harm, but actually support the body’s endeavor to remain fully functional, and in doing so, support the animal’s overall wellbeing and happiness. The best holistic commercial pet foods are those that contain highest quality, health-promoting ingredients which are not heat-treated and allow keeping supplementation with isolated nutrients down to the absolute required minimum.

What Does Splitting Mean When It Comes To Labeling On Pet Food?

What Does Splitting Mean When It Comes To Labeling On Pet Food?

I try to tell people that meat whether it be beef, chicken, lamb or venison should make up the bulk of what their dog or cat is eating and with a raw or homemade diet it is pretty easy to accomplish this task.

But with commercial pet food you get what you get so to speak and most people are quick to point out that chicken or fish or whatever meat is the first ingredient on their bags or cans label. Therefore they believe or picture it as the main ingredient in the food. But is it really the bulk of the food your pet is eating?

The first ingredient listed on a label always makes up the bulk of the food. That applies to all food that comes pre-made, canned, or bagged.

So if corn is the first ingredient on the list than you already know that it’s making up the most of the food and you can bypass it for a more meaty meal.

But pet food companies obviously want you to buy their food at the least cost to them. Because corn is an inexpensive filler for pet food pet, along with other grains, these pet food companies want to put it in there without us realizing that it is making up the majority of the food and they use label splitting to accomplish this.

Let’s use corn as an example. There is a long list of corn products that can be used in pet food. These include:

Corn Flour – This is the small size, hard part of ground corn that contains modest amounts or none of the bran or germ.

Corn Bran – This is the outer covering of the corn kernel and contains little or none of the starchy part of the germ.

Corn gluten meal – This is the dried remains from the corn after the starch and germ are removed. It is a by-product of processing corn to make corn starch and corn syrup.

So to demonstrate food splitting let’s use these corn products in an ingredient list.

Chicken, Corn Flour, Soybean Mill Run 16% (source of fiber), Chicken By-Product Meal, Powdered Cellulose, Corn Gluten Meal, Soybean Meal, Chicken Liver Flavor, Corn Bran, Soybean Oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, potassium iodide, Vitamin D-3 supplement, folic acid, sodium selenite, biotin. A-4586.

So we may think that chicken is the biggest ingredient and corn flour is the second biggest ingredient but that’s not really the case here.

When we pull out all the ingredients that actually come from corn we can see that they are spread around the ingredient list and clearly added together would make the bulk of the food.

Corn as a whole would be the greatest ingredient of this food. And that’s how food splitting works.

So check out your pet food and see if you’ve been feeding what you think you’ve been feeding or is food splitting with corn or other grains happening to you.

If it is you can bet that it’s a trick to make you think otherwise and how much would you trust a food making company that’s trying to trick you?

Freya our black cat. Sister to Loki, top cat in the house.

Loki, sister to Freya and a shy cat. Actually Loki is braver then Freya in that she is the first to explore new things, but she gives herself a safe distance much of the time.

Danya is hiding on the chair watching what goes on. She is an ex-feral and the cat ranking system has her in the lowest spot. She doesn’t want to be and pushes to get out, but there isn’t much room to move in a three person system.

What does it mean when a dog licks another dog under the chin?

Question by KS: What does it mean when a dog licks another dog under the chin?
I’m taking care of some family’s dogs for the week, but I only own one dog. My dog always seems very aggressive towards other dogs, but they seem to be getting along alright. My dog is always trying to lick under the chin of one of the other dogs, and that dog doesn’t seem to like it much. Is that some type of communication, and if yes, what does it mean?

Also…since I’ve got you here :) … my dog keeps taking the toys aways from that particular dog. If the one dog starts playing by himself with a toy, or if they start a game of tug of war, my dog starts growling and takes the toy away. Is that how dogs normally play, or is my dog being a bit selfish?

Best answer:

Answer by Sexy_Morena
All together he is just showing affection either that or the other dog has food on his chin. All dogs play tug of war that way they are like kids if one plays with a toy the other will try to take it away.
