How many puppies does a maltese have on a first litter?
Question by Jen: How many puppies does a maltese have on a first litter?
We have a Maltese whom we are going to be breeding (with other maltese) in the future. While being watched by a friend of ours while we were out of town, she mated with a neighbor’s begeal and is now pregnant. We have found a good homes for up to 3 puppies, but I’ve read conflicting information over whether a first litter is larger or smaller than usual. All of the information I have is on breeding maltese with maltese, does the father’s breed make a difference in the mechanics of pregnancy and birth? Does anyone have any puppy-rearing advice, I want to make sure I do everything right by the pups. Any help would be appreciated!

First off, Maltese females have a very hard time giving birth.
C-sections are very common. Some vets will even suggest scheduling one to ward off potential life threatening complications. I’ve seen as many as 5 puppies in a maltese litter, as few as 1. A lot depends on the female’s genetics.
If her mother had large or small litters.
Get a lot of prenatal care for the pregnant female.

I just got some answers saying that i should let the mom dog leave her puppies sometimes.But would anything bad happen to the puppies if she leaves?
Oh yeah and can i hold the puppies ? Or would the bacteria cause them to have diseases. I’ve been told that i wasn’t able to hold them for a few weeks.
And yes , the mom dog does trust me to even get near her babies.

Animal babies do something called imprinting. Imprinting is the attachment to a mother during a short period after birth. If animals are refused that time, they do not imprint and later have emotional problems. They also may have difficulty feeling a connection with anyone the rest of their lives (theory on animals, sure for humans). My advice is to keep them with their mother for now.

I have heard 3 weeks to 4 weeks. Do puppies start nursing less frequent when they hit 3 weeks old? I’m not planning on taking them from their mother until at least 8 weeks old.

I have an Old English Sheepdog. They also are known as bobtails. Please answer. I really need to know even though she can’t have puppies. At least give me an estimate on just an average dog.

about 6-8 pups. and they can have them two times a year.. do the math and thats a lot of puppies!! and not enough homes for them all…
