Should You Use a Dog Trainer Or Train Your Dog Yourself?
This is an often discussed subject. Which is best?
There is no generally right or wrong answer here, it is all down to you and your dog. Is your new dog a puppy or an older animal you have rescued? What is the current level of your new dog’s training? (toilet training, obedience etc) Do you have the time and knowledge to train your dog? Do you have the money to spend on a professional dog trainer? What breed is your dog?
All of these questions will have an impact on whether it is best for you to train your dog or use a professional trainer.
Some problem dogs (I have that term but many people understand it) may need a professional trainer to get rid of certain habits. But a ‘problem dog’ is usually the result of a ‘problem owner’ who has not given their pet the correct signals during its training or up-bringing so bad habits have formed. Most dogs are very receptive to training of some degree. Each breed may be better at certain things, but all dogs naturally want to learn and please their owners. How you train yours all depends on the dog you have.
If you have the money but not enough time to do the training yourself then maybe using a professional trainer is fine. But if you had already chosen that option you would not be here reading this article.
So here we will just look at the option of training your new dog yourself.
Whatever age your dog is, he or she will still want to please you. Old dogs can learn new tricks, as I proved on numerous occasions with my old dog who lived to be 19 years old!
So age is not a problem. All you need to be able to train YOUR dog is the knowledge of how to do it. Training a dog is not difficult IF you do it properly from the start. Even rescue dogs who have had bad experiences can be trained quite easily by their new owner. A new owner to a dog is a new start, they may bring some bad experiences or habits with them but they are very receptive to you and what YOU want them to do. Do things right from the start and you will make life much better for you and your new dog (or old dog).
Now if you have had your dog for a while and it still needs training don’t worry. Even if you have not done everything right from the start you can still train your dog now. Don’t underestimate the intelligence of your dog or it’s willingness to please it’s owner. ALL dogs can be trained if you know how.
And that is the important bit. HOW can you train your dog quickly and have fun doing it?
The answer is quite simple, as I eventually found out. Just click the link below and you can get a copy of the information I used to train my dogs and make my life a lot easier.

Maverick is a 5 year old Yorkshire Terrier. He routinely jumps to greet visitors. As you can see, this experiment took place off-leash. Sits were offered, not cued. Stats: 1st entry – 11 jumps (in 14 seconds!), 2nd entry – 4 jumps, 3rd entry – 1 jump. Cooper is a maltese/poodle mix and is 2 years & 9 months old in this video. Coopers stats: 1st entry – 8 jumps, 2nd entry – 2 jumps. All sits were offered, not cued. Maverick & Cooper are not likely to generalize “sit to greet” other visitors after one session. If their owner’s wanted to continue to reinforce sitting, they should practice clicking for different visitors at different times of the day. Special thanks to Maverick & Cooper’s owners for letting me play with their dogs. This was fun & I learned that the clicker works on non-ridgebacks, too. Wink.

Why You Should Think About Hiring A Dog Trainer With Clicker
Why You Should Think About Hiring A Dog Trainer With Clicker
Article by Paul Bright
If you want your pet to have the training he needs, it is best you hire a dog trainer with clicker because this is one of the most effective ways a dog can learn new tricks. Aside from being effective, it is a fast way your pet dog can be trained. This has been proven by the many people who have tried out a clicker training tool. But you do not need to pay for an expensive dog trainer if you are planning to use a clicker.
A clicker trainer can be purchased at almost any pet store. When you go to a pet store, you can check out the many different types of clicker training tools. Most of these clickers come in a small rectangular box which has a metallic button. When you give a command to your pet, you simply press the button and it will emit a clicking sound. Once this is done, you have to remember to supply each click with a doggie treat. This will ensure that your pet understands what you are trying to tell him.
Because of the success of this device, there are a lot of people who work as a dog trainer with clicker training experience. These people already know how best to train a pet because they have been successful with the device. There are a lot of tricks that they can teach your pet while using a clicker. But even if their time with your pet is already over, you can easily continue the training of your pet as long as you have a clicker.
The important thing you have to remember when you use a clicker when training your pet is that you have to give treats everytime you give a command. This will let your pet know that you approve of his behavior. When he does something bad, you have to make sure you don’t give him treats so that he will associate the behaviour he did as something you do not approve of.
With the use of a clicker, you can easily train your dog to do the things you want from him. You no longer have to hire a dog trainer with clicker to do the job since you can get the job done on your own.

Cat Declawing – Reasons Why You Should Not Declaw a Cat
Cat Declawing – Reasons Why You Should Not Declaw a Cat
A cat’s claws are a vital part of their physical and psychological well-being. Many people do not realize that declawing a cat is inhumane, and a very unnecessary major surgical procedure which often leaves the declawed cat with physical and psychological problems that will last their lifetime.
Cats use their claws for many reasons such as to exercise, groom themselves, mark their territory, and as a first line of defense against predators. Cats scratch as part of a normal instinct, and taking that away can lead to even worse behavior problems. Many people believe that declawing a cat just consists of removal of the cat’s nails but this is not the case. It is actually an amputation of all the cat’s digits at the first knuckle of bone. It is a major surgery, which is very painful to the cat, and recovery and healing from this surgery can be painful and difficult for the cat. Complications such as infection can occur, as well as the general risk of anethesia during the procedure.
The declawed cat often develops litter box issues, such as not using the litter box, because the litter hurts their feet, so they begin avoiding the box and start peeing and pooping in various places around the home. This leads to further frustration on the part of the cat owner who is now faced with the cat damaging the floors and leaving behind unpleasant odors throughout the house. Cat urine odor is very difficult to remove, and a cat’s sense of smell is more sensitive than humans. Once the cat begins urinating on the floor, they will often continue to do so because, despite the owners attempts to clean the area and remove the odor, it still exists to the cat’s sensitive sense of smell, and this unwanted behavior persists.
The cat owner then becomes even more frustrated as this behavior continues. They often don’t understand why their cat who used to faithfully use the litter box now refuses to do so, and often will blame the cat for another bad behavior problem, when it is not the cat’s fault at all. If the owner cannot get the cat to start using the litter box again, they will often start considering letting the cat go outside. This poses a huge safety risk to the cat because once the cat has been declawed, they have no way to defend themselves to the many dangers that exist outside. Declawed cats cannot be let outside because they can no longer effectively defend themselves and cannot climb trees to get out of harms way. Once a cat has been declawed, there is not an option of safely converting the indoor cat to be an outdoor cat.
Another common problem with cats who have been declawed is biting. Because they do not have their nails anymore, the cat can become very frustrated. The scratching instinct that the cat has can no longer be satisfied and can lead to the cat starting to bite. Even the best behaved cat can become mean and unsociable and because they no longer have their claws, they resort to biting as a way of letting you know they are unhappy. I am aware of many cases where cat declawing has had a negative impact on the cat and its social behavior. This, however, does not happen in all cases. Some cats who have been declawed seem to do just fine and adjust to their situation without difficulty or resulting behavior problems. But, many cats do not adjust well, and the owners often end up feeing guilty that they did this to their pet.
The best thing a cat owner who is considering having their cat declawed can do is plenty of research. Find out all there is to know about the procedure, the risks, and the outcome. Talk to others who have had their cats declawed and get their opinions. Do not just take a vet’s approval on this issue. Some vets will say it is no big deal because they stand to profit from the surgery, and they do not have to live with the cat afterward. Other vets will discourage this procedure because they know it is not the right thing to do. Make sure the decision you make is an informed one. You do not want to end up with regret, as this surgery is permanent.
There are many options the cat owner has as an alternative to getting their cat declawed. One option is to purchase nail caps which are caps that are glued to the cats nails to prevent the damage from scratching. Another choice is to learn how to safely trim your cat’s nails to keep them short and dull which will reduce the damaging effects of scratching. Provide several different styles of scratching posts and cat trees in your home to encourage your kitty to scratch the appropriate things. Scratching posts made of sisal rope work really well and cats seem to enjoy using them to scratch on. Try using double-sided sticky tape on the areas where you don’t want your cat scratching. It provides a surface that cats do not enjoy and will deter them from scratching there. Buy some scented deterrent sprays that are made to keep cats away and spray it on areas where the unwanted scratching is occurring. It may take a little more effort on your part, but the outcome can be very successful without having to put your cat through a declawing surgery.
Cat declawing has been banned in many countries, unfortunately as of yet, the United States has not adopted this law, and hopefully this will change. Anyone who is considering putting their cat through this should consider and try all the other options. There is just not a good enough reason to put your cat through such an awful surgery. And not just the surgery and recovery, but the lifelong effects it will have on your cat.

I’m a dog trainer and want to know what rate I should rent a space for group classes?
Question by BBALL GRRL: I’m a dog trainer and want to know what rate I should rent a space for group classes?
I’m a dog trainer just south of Devner, Colorado and have been looking into rentable space to hold group classes. I found a doggie daycare/boarding place that is opening near me who has a space but both the owner an myself have never done this before. Anyone out there know anyone or personally have experience doing this? Is there a rate per month or percentage given to the landlord?
Other advice?
Best answer:
Answer by Love My Pit Bull
I belong to a dog club and they charge per date. People can rent the building for 1 day or 2, etc but I am not sure what they charge. Because we belong to the club or join a class they charge $ 80.00 per 8 week session. Now here is the catch, they actually pay rent on a monthly basis. I am not sure how Colorado works but I would think you would have to pay a monthly rental on the space. You also want to make sure you have enough space because believe me once word gets out you will be holding class every night. A lot of people are getting into training their dogs, not only obedience but agility, flyball, just to name a few. Our classes are always full and they have a waiting list. Remember insurance and utilities (gas and electric) along with parking space, cleaning, and other office and dog supplies. If you are going to share the space with the doggie daycare/boarding facility, you will have to work out a schedule for the day(s) that you want to hold classes and again share the rent and insurance. I am sure there are other things I am forgetting, maybe check with the small business administration to see what information they have that could help. Good luck in your new venture.

Should I feed my 4 month old kitty dry or wet food?
Question by : Should I feed my 4 month old kitty dry or wet food?
When I got her she was on dry food, but I always thought wet food was better. I read some other things saying that I shouldn’t have switched it so fast, which is understandable. I was just wondering if either is actually BAD for them?
I heard wet food is good for their coats, but without dry food, tarter and plaque can build up.
I feed her wt, and give her dry treats though, so she’s good right?
Thanks.

Answer by Jaded Ruby
Keep her on dry kibble. This should be her BASE diet. then you should be giving her the WET as a treat and to make sure she is hydrated. But this okay every night or even every other day. But you want her main diet to be the kibble or her teeth will rot. Besides most wet food except very HIGH grade canned food doesn’t meet the majority of their diet requirements. They absolutely LOVE and will inhale as much wetfood as you allow..but this is more like ice cream on the cat and extra water. you need to make sure they are getting their “cereal” which is their source nutrition, not the other way around.
There are other more complicated diet regimes for breeders and the like but for a pet owner this is the best routine to keep your kitten and their TEETH healthy for the long run.

Why you should opt for a Certified Dog Trainer over training pets yourself
Why you should opt for a Certified Dog Trainer over training pets yourself
Article by Willie Hernandez
Have you been struggling a great deal with your dog’s behavioral problems? You are most likely using training methods that are not getting you close to any success. Not to worry, because most of the dog training efforts people attempt fail to work anyway. Here are the most common reasons why some strategies fail and why you are better off seeking the services of a Certified Dog Trainer.
Poor Implementation procedure
You may be referring to a very good source of dog-training theories but are failing to execute them well in real life. In fact, most of the methods you will come across are, by themselves, difficult to apply. They are complicated and require one who has had mastery in the specific field to help you; hence, the need to contract a certified dog trainer who is likely to handle it more professionally. It is not a matter of watching a video clip and just simply imitating what you see.
Differing views about what is best for your dog
These days, the love for dogs can dupe people into believing that they are dog specialists. The fact that you have lived with them all your life does not warrant your opinion at all. Therefore, you cannot afford to listen to just about everything that people say about dogs and take their word for it. You need a certified dog trainer who, from proven track record, research and first-hand experience, knows how to deal with all sorts of problems your dog may have. There is no single and best way of dealing with a dog’s problem.
Do not hesitate to contact a local certified dog trainer if you are just starting with your puppy or if you have a dog that has been around but needs a check because of behavior problems.
Willie Hernandez is a part time dog trainer who actually believes house training a dog is something you should never have to hire a trainer to do if you have the time and patience to see the job through properly.
What should I do about my cat not finishing her food? Should I give her something different?
Question by Shaniqua R: What should I do about my cat not finishing her food? Should I give her something different?
My cat is 5 months now and at first, she would finish her food for everytime I fed her. I know since she is getting older, I would have to feed her more. However, for the last two weeks, she wouldn’t even finish her food. Perhaps that’s a sign to give her something different but if it is, what’s the best brand for cat foods? I’ve been feeding her Whiskas, Friskies (canned foods) and Purina (dry foods) since I got her.

Cats are nibblers. They eat a little bit now, then come back for more later. Were you feeding her canned food at first then went to dry? Could be she got a little spoiled by eating canned.

Q&A: What kinds of food should a new momma kitty have?
Question by honey: What kinds of food should a new momma kitty have?
My 1 year old cat is due to have her babies any day now. I am wondering if there is anything special I should feed her/give to her? Can she have milk? Should she have vitamins? And, how old will the babies be before they start eating/drinking on their own? Should they start with milk and soft food?
I know that the momma kitty should have kitten food (I understand that), but the problem I have is we also have another cat that is not pg and is also a year old. Would it be ok for her to eat the kitten food as well? I hate to buy 2 kinds of food and try to separate them when eating, especially since the momma kitty eats so much so often.

Answer by Shadycat
Mommy cat should be eating KITTEN FOOD now — actually, from the minute you find out she’s pregnant — up until AT LEAST the time she weans the kittens. She needs the extra nutrition to gestate them and then to nurse them.
Milk isn’t a good idea – it could upset hre tummy. Don’t give it to the babies, either.
The babies will nurse from mommy for at least 4 weeks. They’ll continue probably for 6-8 weeks minimum, and you can let them nurse until mommy says it’s time to quit. They should stay with her until 12 weeks if possible, but absolutely NO LESS than 8 weeks.
Around 4-6 weeks you can introduce kitten food to them, as well. If it’s dry food, make sure it’s moistened with warm water and then mashed so it’s soft for their little baby teeth. You can even get kitten formula and mix it up with canned kitten food so it’s soupy, if you want, but they really won’t need the formula mixture as long as they’re nursing on the mommy cat.
Make sure mommy cat has LOTS of food and water. She needs to eat tons while pregnant/nursing — as much as she wants. And the kittens will be eating every 2-3 hours.
Oh yes, and when you watch them nurse, you will see the cutest thing ever. When they’re almost done with a feeding, all their little ears will start bobbing. Insanely cute!
Enjoy — it’s gonna be an adventure.
Oh yes, prepare for the “biting”. Kittens LOVE to bite once their baby teeth come in!
