Just like with any other training, it is best if you start when they are very young. Starting a routine at an early age will help you become successful at cage training your puppy sooner, since it becomes second nature to your new dog.
Many new dog owners seem to think that they should only start cage training a puppy when they are one or two years old – but that is much too late for dogs. You CAN teach an old dog new tricks, but it’ll be much easier if you don’t wait that long.
On that other hand, there is such a thing as starting TOO young. You should start training as soon as possible, but basically what it comes down to is that a very young puppy simply cannot control their bladder, and he will need to pee and poo more often.
If your new puppy is at least 9 weeks old, then it’s alright to start crate training him. Just keep in mind that young puppies can’t be kept locked up in their kennel quite as long as older puppies.
Here is a good guideline for duration of kennel training a puppy….
9 to 10 weeks: about 30 to 60 minutes11 to 14 weeks: about 1 to 3 hours15 to 16 weeks: about 3 to 4 hours17 or more week: about 4 to 5 hours
When your puppy is 17 weeks or older, he should never be left locked up in the kennel for longer than 6 hours at a time. The only exception is during the night time when they are sleeping.

In later videos, you will see a lot more refinement of this. I am moving around the dog because at this stage of the game, I am actually the distraction and I want the dog concentrating on the mark even though I am moving or something else might be moving around him. He can clearly see it, as it is just a small toss right in front of him. This is being done for a longer period of time as it gives the dog more chance for options and helps him dial it in easier. This is just the first phase of this, and you will also see it done with my 2 year old Belgian Malinois. This drill will be perfected in later videos so that you can see it out of motion, and from different angles and different positions. ‘Mark’ or ‘Watch’ should be treated as a very thoroughly trained command just like other commands.
